The invention provides a method for softening of water comprising dissolving/dispersing a water soluble alkali metal carbonate, a seed for precipitating calcium carbonate, a sequestrant selected from amino polycarboxylic acid, amino polyphosphonic acid, nitrilo triacetic acid or salts thereof; wherein not more than 20 wt% of the sequestrant dissolves in the water in the first 30 seconds after the dissolution/dispersion of said water soluble alkali metal carbonate and said seed for precipitating calcium carbonate. The invention also provides an effective builder composition for use in a detergent composition comprising (i) a water soluble alkali metal carbonate; (ii) a seed for precipitating calcium carbonate; and (iii) a sequestrant selected from amino polycarboxylic acid, amino polyphosphonic acid, nitrilo triacetic acid or salts thereof wherein said sequestrant is present in the form of granules having a particle size of 0.5 to 2 mm so as to achieve delayed release of the sequestrant.
