The airbag unit has an airbag rolled or folded into a package (12). A retaining and attachment element (20) is formed from flexible material for holding the package. The element has a retaining section (44) holding the package in a circumferential direction, where a part of the retaining section is flexibly formed. The element has fastening sections (40, 42) with fastening openings (26). A connecting line is provided in transition region between the fastening section (40) and the retaining section such that a double-layer section (46) is formed, which rests against the package.
