<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide iron nitride-base magnetic powder, usable for backup magnetic tape for high-capacity computers suitable for high recording density. <P>SOLUTION: The method is for manufacturing the iron nitride-based magnetic powder, having an average grain size of 8-20 nm, having a core phase containing a crystal phase, mainly consisting of Fe<SB>16</SB>N<SB>2</SB>, and an outer layer including at least one element selected from among rare earths, Al and Si. It includes a coating process using iron-based oxide or iron-based hydroxide for a start material, for coating an outside layer on the start material.
