PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a production method which can easily produce porous ceramics having two kinds of pore groups in which the degree of freedom in form is high and hole sizes are different. SOLUTION: Disclosed is a method for producing porous ceramics comprising: a porous base material forming step where a mixture obtained by mixing particles containing at least silica, an inflammable resin and a plasticizer is molded into a prescribed shape, thereafter, the plasticizer is extracted from the mixture, so as to obtain a porous green compact, next, the porous green compact is impregnated with a sintering assistant-containing liquid, and the porous green compact impregnated with the sintering assistant-containing liquid is fired, so as to burn down the resin, thus the porous base material is obtained; and a porous film forming step where the porous base material is impregnated with a solution for forming a porous film containing metal alkoxide, a catalyst, a surfactant and water, and, on the porous base material, a coating film in which a part thereof is infiltrated into the pores of the porous base material is formed, and thereafter, the coating film is fired, so as to form a porous film.
