PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a benzylidene malonamide compound having a high water solubility and having an excellent absorptivity in ultraviolet light wave length region. SOLUTION: This benzylidene malonamide compound or its salt is expressed by general formula (1) having the substituents (R<SB>1</SB>to R<SB>5</SB>) of a benzene ring and N-substituents R<SB>6</SB>, R<SB>7</SB>of the amide [wherein, R<SB>1</SB>to R<SB>4</SB>are each H, an alkyl, an alkoxy or -NR<SB>8</SB>R<SB>9</SB>(wherein, R<SB>8</SB>, R<SB>9</SB>are each H or an alkyl and NR<SB>8</SB>R<SB>9</SB>may be a 5- to 6-membered heterocyclic ring); R<SB>5</SB>is H, an alkyl or an alkoxy; R<SB>1</SB>with R<SB>2</SB>, R<SB>2</SB>with R<SB>5</SB>, R<SB>5</SB>with R<SB>3</SB>and R<SB>3</SB>with R<SB>4</SB>can form a 5- to 6 membered ring by joining with each other and condensing with a benzene ring to which they are bonding; R<SB>6</SB>, R<SB>7</SB>are each ä(CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>m</SB>-O}<SB>n</SB>-R<SB>10</SB>(wherein, R<SB>10</SB>is H or an alkyl); (m) is an integer of 2 to 4; and (n) is an integer of 1 to 5].
