An apparatus and a method for determining characteristics of earth format ions traversed by a borehole that compensates the mudcake and standoff effec ts with fewer than usual detectors (16). The apparatus includes a radiation source (11) effective to generate first and, spatially as well as temporally separate, second X-rays for irradiating earth formations from first and sec ond entrance angles (13, 15), one or more X-ray detectors (16) capable of ge nerating a first and a second signal indicative of the intensity of the firs t and second X-rays (12, 14) returned from earth formations to the detectors and a housing accommodating the radiation source and the detectors.
