The device has a scanning unit (20) with an illumination unit (30) for emitting light towards a code (10) for forming code elements (C) on a detector unit (40), where the code elements form a code word (CW). An evaluation unit (50) determines the code with actual position information from detecting signals (S) of detector elements (D) of the unit (40). The unit (20) and the code are movable relative to each other in a measurement direction (X). The signals to be evaluated for forming the code word are selected based on the formation of the code elements forming the code word on the unit (40). An independent claim is also included for a method for absolute position determination of an object.
