A fastener assembly (figure 3) is used to secure a gas turbine engine rotor disc assembly 8 to a hollow shaft 4 in a situation which otherwise would required the use of a trapped nut (6, figure 2). The hollow shaft 4 has external splines 18 and a threaded end portion 20, and is engaged with the disc hub 8 which has internal splines 16. The hub 8 is then clamped to the shaft 4 by tightening a securing nut 32, 34 onto the threaded end 20 of the shaft 4. The splined portion 16 of the hub 8 is provided with an axial keyway 40 42 through which the securing nut 32, 34 is passed into the limited access space (44 figure 3). Once the shaft 4 is engaged with the hub 8 the nut 32 is then engaged with the thread 20 on the shaft 8 and tightened using a special tool (figure 6) extending through the centre of the shaft. The tool is withdrawn after use. |
