The starter for an internal combustion engine of especially a motor vehicle, with a rotor shaft of a starter motor passing through an opening in a partition between the starter motor and planetary gear, has a dirt deflector (58) which encompasses the rotor shaft (24) and is arranged between an inside circumference (57) of the partition (52) and an outside circumference (64) of the rotor shaft. The dirt deflector may be fastened on the partition or detachably connected to it.
