<p>Use of a preparation comprising at least a hydrocarbonate salt as active agent and/or at least a compound, which is metabolized in the body to hydrocarbonate salt, for the preparation of an agent for the prevention or treatment of diseases, preferably cardiovascular diseases, cancer, hypertension, diabetes, osteoporosis, chronic renal failure and other diseases associated with acute renal failure, is claimed, where the preparation is administered in a particular dosage by which the pH of the urine is adjusted to a value of >= 7. An independent claim is included for the prevention or treatment of above diseases, comprising administering the preparation, measuring the pH of urine, and re-administering the preparation, if the measured pH of the urine is less than 7 and repeating the administration and measurement of the pH, until the pH of urine is reached to >= 7.
