A cooking appliance and a method of controlling the cooking appliance are provided to control the power of a heating unit in stages after the lapse of a set time such that the power of the heating unit decreases after the set time to thereby reduce waste of energy. A user inputs a signal through a key for cooking food(S100). Heat for cooking is supplied according to the inputted signal(S200). It is confirmed whether the key is inputted for a predetermined time for cooking according to the inputted signal(S300). The power level of a heater is controlled according to whether the key is inputted or not(S400).
