A novel selective hydrogenation method of the carbon-carbon double bond of a diene-based polymer of bulk state is provided to enhance the degree of hydrogenation within the allowable short reaction time under the mild temperature condition. A selective hydrogenation method of the carbon-carbon double bond of a diene-based polymer comprises the step of hydrogenating a diene-based polymer of bulk state in the presence of an iridium-containing catalyst by an amount less than 1 wt% based on the amount of the polymer to be hydrogenated and in the absence of an arbitrary organic solvent. The iridium-containing catalyst is an iridium complex represented by [Ir(COD)LL']PF6, wherein COD represents 1,5-cyclooctadiene; L is PR3 (wherein R is alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl); and L' is PR3 (wherein R is alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl) or pyridine.
