Before setting up a call to a called party using a first communication mode, a dual-mode mobile terminal may determine whether the called party is available using a second communication mode. The determining may, for example, involve querying a database with a first-mode identity of the calle d party as a key, to obtain an associated second-mode identity. Alternatively, the second-mode identity may form part of presence information reported by the called party through a presence service in which the called party acts as a presentity. The second-mode identity may then be used to initiate the call. Advantageously, there may be a cost saving associated with placing the call using the second mode.
