A cooking appliance and a method of controlling the cooking appliance are provided to select a cooking course by a user and cook in a bidirectional process to improve satisfaction of food. A cooking appliance includes a cavity(120), a sensor, a controller, and a guide unit. The sensor collects information on food placed in the inner space of the cavity. The sensor includes an image sensing part(210), a weight sensing part(220) and a volume sensing part(230). The image sensing part senses food state and cooking state. The weight sensing part senses the weight of food. The volume sensing part senses the volume of the food. The controller compares information collected by the sensor with predetermined data. The guide unit guides a cooking process according to the information.
