The compass (1) has an elongated inner arm (2) mounted slidingly in an elongated outer sheath (5). The arm (2) penetrates into the sheath across an end (7) of the sheath so that the arm (2) is equipped with a ratchet whose part (29) is adapted to be engaged selectively in reception orifices (12) arranged in the sheath. The sheath has two enclosures (13, 14) near the end (7), where the enclosures receive simultaneously ends of the ratchet in a configuration where a side of the ratchet is thrust against an edge of the enclosure (13).
