The device (60) has an assembly of energy storage cells (2) connected in series, and balancing circuits (10, 41) balancing the cells during discharging of the cells by enabling flow of balancing current in the cells. A diagnosis system (61) provides information e.g. temperature, associated to one of the cells. The balancing circuits control the balancing current and a balancing time based on external information e.g. voltage information of a supply battery, independent from the cells and the information associated to the cell, provided by the diagnosis system. An independent claim is also included for a method of balancing an energy storage device.
