PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of detecting a wrong sheet while suppressing increase of manufacturing cost as far as possible. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus 10 is equipped with an optical sensor 68 for detecting the wrong sheet when a backing sheet to be used as a recording sheet is erroneously fed in such a state that the front side and back side of the paper are reversed, and is equipped with an image forming part 12 for forming an image on the recording sheet conveyed by a conveying belt 40 circularly traveling when forming an image, and forming a toner pattern directly on a conveying surface of the conveying belt 40 when image stabilization processing, wherein the optical sensor 68 is provided at a position where it faces the sheet conveying surface of the conveying belt 40 on an upstream side of the image forming part that is a portion required until the recording sheet fed out from a paper feeding part 14 reaches the image forming part 12. When the image stabilization processing, the toner pattern circularly conveyed to the upstream side of the image forming part 12 by the circular traveling of the conveying belt 40 is also detected by using the optical sensor 68.
