PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector that enhances hue as necessary, without reducing the brightness of a projected image. SOLUTION: The projector 1000 includes a lighting device 100 as a colored-light generating means and a color separation light guide optical system 200; reflective liquid crystal panels 400R, 400G and 400B for modulating three colored lights which are color-separated by the color separation light guide optical system 200, according to image information; and a projection optical system 600 for projecting the colored light modulated by the reflective liquid crystal panels 400R, 400G and 400B. The reflective liquid crystal panels 400R, 400G and 400B each has a transparent substrate, an element substrate having a plurality of pixel electrodes, a liquid crystal layer, sealed in between the transparent substrate and the element substrate, and a grating layer that is formed in a grating form in a plane view and reflects light of a predetermined wavelength region among the light incident to a region between a plurality of pixel electrodes.
