PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the fiber direction of a paper, and to prevent failures from occurring due to the fiber direction. SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus has a curved conveying path for conveying paper to a transfer unit for transferring image information to the paper. The image forming apparatus includes an imaging element 42 for reading the paper 28 that is conveyed to the outer periphery of a curved portion in the curved conveying path; and a light source 41 for irradiating an object to be read of the imaging element 42 with light, while arranging the optical axis 41a of the irradiating light is set at a predetermined angle to the curved portion in the curved conveying path to determine the fiber direction of the paper. The image forming apparatus determines the fiber direction of the paper, based on the imaging results of the imaging element 42 and changes the processing steps of forming the image according to the fiber direction of the paper thus determined.
