PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure safety of a unit in a control system and an image forming apparatus including a plurality of units connected to one another through a communication line. SOLUTION: A fixing control unit for controlling a fixing unit includes an abnormality detecting means for detecting abnormality of a heating means according to a measured temperature and a preset condition and outputting an abnormality signal showing abnormality. A driving unit for driving the heating means includes a protection means for stopping the supply of power to the heating means to protect the fixing unit when abnormality is detected. The fixing control unit includes an output means for forcedly outputting a signal showing abnormality according to an instruction transmitted through the communication line regardless of the measured temperature. The driving unit includes a transmission means for transmitting a signal showing the start of protection to an image formation control unit through the communication line when the protective means becomes active.
