An apparatus for reproducing a moving picture file and a method thereof are provided to reduce the power consumption by stopping the power supply to a hard disk in case of performing only the moving picture file reproducing work. A storing unit(10) stores data. A memory unit(20) reads and temporarily stores data to be used among the data stored in the storing unit. A control unit(30) reads data from the storing unit, assigns it to the memory unit, and then accesses to the memory area to which the data is assigned. In a moving picture reproducing mode, a power supply unit(40) stops the power supply to the storing unit when the moving picture file is assigned to the memory unit.
