A communication repeater including a controller that updates a firmware is provided to upgrade a firmware of a communication repeater remotely by using a PSTN. A modem pool server(110) checks over the information of a new firmware, and makes a call to a communication repeater(120) through a PSTN(130). The modem pool server provides an upgrade service for unmanned firmware to the communication repeater. The communication repeater upgrades the new firmware according to the control command from the modem pool server. A controller(140) downloads all kinds of firmware stored at an additional non-volatile RAM and stores the firmware in a non-volatile memory.
