<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To properly suppress a speed change shock capable of occurring when changing speed between continuously variable transmission mode and a fixed change gear ratio mode. <P>SOLUTION: This controller for a hybrid vehicle is loaded in the hybrid vehicle or the like having an engine and a motor generator as drive sources, configured such that two modes of the continuously variable transmission mode and the fixed change gear ratio mode can be changed over. Specifically, a speed change power calculation means calculates speed change power based on a present operating point and an operating point after the speed change, and a speed change determination means determines whether to adjust engine power to change the speed or not based on the speed change power and the present engine power. A speed change control means adjusts the engine power to change the speed when it is determined that the engine power is adjusted to change the speed.
