Class 9(2) The ammonium nitrate/sodium chloride blasting explosives of powder, semi-gelatine, or gelatine consistency having included therein a water-swellable and water-soluble macro-molecular polysaccharide ether claimed in the parent Specification are modified by replacing the whole of the ammonium nitrate and at least a portion of the sodium chloride with corresponding equimolecular amounts of ammonium chloride and sodium nitrate together. ¢-5 per cent of ethers such as methyl cellulose, methylethyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, sodium salt of carboxymethyl cellulose, or sodium salt of carboxymethyl starch may be used. Preferably the ether is mixed with the inorganic salts or other combustibles before incorporating the other ingredients, e.g. nitroglycerine/nitrocellulose gelatine. “-5 per cent of calcium stearate, may be included. Other ingredients are: nitroglycerine, orthonitrotoluol, nitrocellulose, 80/20 nitroglycerine/ethylene glycol dinitrate, woodmeal, wheatflour, and china clay.
