687,255. Glass compositions. OWENSCORNING FIBERGLAS CORPORATION. July 25, 1951, No. 17693/51. Class 56. Glass has the following weight percentage composition, SiO 2 50-62, TiO 2 5-25, B 2 O 3 2- 12, and Na 2 O 10-20. ZrO 2 up to a maximum of 16 per cent may replace part of the TiO 2 , the TiO 2 then preferably being below 16 per cent. Al 2 O 3 1-10 per cent and/or F 0.5-8 per cent may also be added. A desirable weight percentage range of compositions is, SiO 2 55- 60, TiO 2 4-12, ZrO 2 1-7, B 2 O 3 5-8, Na 2 O 11- 15, Al 2 O 3 3-5, F 3-5, and a preferred composition is SiO, 57.8, TiO 2 7.7, ZrO 2 3.9, B 2 O 3 7.7, Na 2 O 14.5, Al 2 O 3 4.9, F 3.5. The fluorine may be added as cryolite, sodium silico fluoride, sodium fluoride, or aluminium fluoride &c. The glasses are particularly suitable for making fibres. Physical properties of the glasses are given. The fibres may be arranged in helterskelter fashion and bonded together at their junctures. |
