The invention relates to the use of volatile organic compounds as markers in the detection of the presence of Mycobacteria especially Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The invention provides a number of compounds useful as markers. Such compounds are frequently emitted by samples containing Mycobacteria and their presence, particularly at increased levels may be used to detect the presence of the bacteria. Also provided is a diagnostic test for tuberculosis, based upon the presence of the bacteria.
