PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suitably detect abnormality of an individual characteristic and abnormality of waste time of an air-fuel ratio sensor. SOLUTION: A system up to the air-fuel ratio sensor 17 from a fuel injection valve 12 is modeled by a primary delay element and a waste time element. A plurality of parameters in the primary delay element and the waste time element are identified by using a Karman filter based on input and output to this model. Abnormality of a predetermined characteristic and abnormality of waste time of the air-fuel ratio sensor are individually determined based on the plurality of identified parameters. The abnormality of the predetermined characteristic of the air-fuel ratio sensor, not mere abnormality of the air-fuel ratio sensor can be specified and detected.
