PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an industrially performable method for producing 2-iodo-3,4-dimethoxybenzonitrile important as an intermediate raw material of a medicine, efficiently from an inexpensive starting material. SOLUTION: This method for producing the 2-iodo-3,4-dimethoxybenzonitrile industrially by a less number of processes and also in a good yield is enabled by using a method comprising a first process of producing 3-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzonitrile by reacting 3-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzaldehyde which is a general purpose industrial raw material, with hydroxylamine or its salt, a second process of iodinating the obtained 3-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzonitrile by molecular iodine in the presence of an oxidant and pyridines to produce 2-iodo-3-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzonitrile and a third process of methylating the obtained 2-iodo-3-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzonitrile to form the 2-iodo-3,4-dimethoxybenzonitrile.
