PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prolong lamp life without lowering the productivity of TWAIN read. SOLUTION: In an image reading device, an original feed means and an optical system for reading an original are provided, and a first mode of reading image information on the original while moving the sheet-like original while stopping the optical system and a second mode of reading the original image by moving the optical system in a sub scanning direction while keeping a distance between an original read surface and an optical reading element constant are set. In the image reading device, when a predetermined condition is satisfied after the read of the original in the first mode is ended, the first and second carriages of the optical system are made to stand by at the reading position of the first mode while keeping a light source turned on, and they are shifted to the next reading operation when the next read request is issued within predetermined time.
