METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING MAGNETIC RECORDING MEDIUM AND MAGNETIC RECORDING/REPRODUCING DEVICE

A method for manufacturing a magnetic recording medium having a magnetically separated magnetic recording pattern on at least one surface of a nonmagnetic substrate comprises the following seven steps performed in the order of (A) to (G): (A) the step of forming a magnetic layer on the nonmagnetic substrate, (B) the step of forming a carbon mask layer on the magnetic layer, (C) the step of forming a resist layer on the carbon mask layer, (D) the step of forming a negative pattern of the magnetic recording pattern on the resist layer, (E) the step of removing the mask layer in a region corresponding to the negative pattern of the magnetic recording pattern, (F) the step of removing at least a surface layer portion of the magnetic layer in the region corresponding to the negative pattern of the magnetic recording pattern, and (G) the step of removing the remaining resist layer and carbon mask layer when desired. The manufactured magnetic recording medium ensures a recording/reproducing property equal to or better than conventional ones and exhibits a high recording density.
