<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polymer electrolyte fuel cell which is less in reduction of battery performance due to deterioration of a catalyst metal. <P>SOLUTION: The polymer electrolyte fuel cell contains one or more ions selected from the group consisting of trisbipyridyl iron ion ([Fe(dpy)<SB>3</SB>]<SP>2+</SP>or [Fe(dpy)<SB>3</SB>]<SP>3+</SP>) and trisphenanthroline iron ion ([Fe(phen)<SB>3</SB>]<SP>2+</SP>or [Fe(phen)<SB>3</SB>]<SP>3+</SP>) in an air electrode catalyst layer containing platinum as an electrode catalyst.
