The invention relates to the use of a polynucleotide for the modulation of stem cells. According to the invention, the polynucleotide codes for a) an EGFL7 polypeptide or polypeptide fragments with the same action, or b) a polypeptide with at least 80 % sequence correspondence to the polypeptide or polypeptide fragments given in a) and which has the same action as the EGFL7 polypeptide, or c) a polypeptide which has inhibitory effect on the polypeptide or polypeptide fragment given in a) or b).
