An apparatus and a method for activating a VoIP service in a USB phone connected to a gateway are provided to enable a client service of a purchased USB device for which a client has a difficulty in installation. A terminal(10) is connected to a gateway(20), and sets up client information and searches, modifies and stores the client information in a USB telephone(30). A VoIP server(40) manages a phone number for enabling a universal VoIP service and enables the connection of an Internet phone(60). A management server(50) manages the authentication or registration function of the gateway, and an Internet phone terminal performs a phone service by using the VoIP client function.
