PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method capable of improving a fuel economy improvement effect and maintaining the effect for a long period of time as compared with a conventional method adding a friction adjusting agent into engine oil in a diesel engine. SOLUTION: In this method for reducing fuel consumption, fuel containing 2-100 wt.% fatty acid methyl ester, and a lubricating oil component having 2.6 mPa s or higher HTHS viscosity are used in the diesel engine, and the friction of sliding surfaces in the engine is reduced by executing pilot injection or post injection.
