PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of suppressing degradation in image quality without making an amount of developer excessive. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: an image density detecting means 101; an independent patch array image forming means 102 for forming independent patch array images of different pitches, the independent patch array image being formed such that solid unit images of fixed shape are cyclically arranged at constant pitches via contact points; a repeated image forming means 103 for repeatedly forming the independent patch array image under a plurality of image formation parameter test conditions; and an image formation parameter setting means 104 by which, based on the density differences or ratios of the plurality of independent patch array images under the image formation parameter test conditions, the image formation parameters used for an image forming process is set.
