PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To downsize a transmitting system coil between the transmitting system coil and a receiving system coil for composing a position measuring apparatus. SOLUTION: The position measuring apparatus includes: a uniaxial excitation coil 14 disposed at a first point; a signal generating circuit for supplying an AC signal to the excitation coil, and exciting it; first, second and third detection coils 21-1, 21-2, 21-3 disposed at a second point so as to have respective central axes orthogonal to each other; and a circuit for obtaining voltage signals from outputs of the first, second and third detection coils. When the excitation coil is excited, a predetermined calculation is implemented by using induction voltages induced in the first, second and third detection coils. When the direction of the central axis of the excitation coil to a coordinate system of the detection coils is known, therefore, an orientation and a distance from the second point to the first point are calculated.
