PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable information device by which menu icon selection can be surely made easily at good timing.

SOLUTION: The portable information device 100 includes a display device 30 for displaying a plurality of selectable menu icons, and an input means 28 for selecting a desired icon from the plurality of menu icons. An index 31 related to selection of a desired menu icon is automatically scanned over the plurality of menu icons, and during retention time while the index 31 stays in the desired menu icon, the desired menu icon is selected with the input means 28. The portable information device 100 further includes a retention time display means 31 for displaying a remaining time of the retention time. A user can select a menu icon while visually confirming the remaining time related to selection of the menu icon with the retention time display means 31.
