<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve problems that it is necessary to cover a surface plate device for cutting with large-scaled equipment to evade insufficient exhaust because the opening part in the periphery of a material to be cut is too large and sufficient exhaust is impossible even when an exhausting apparatus is used in an existing cutting surface plate device and, even when using these methods, though steep improvement is performed as to exhaust, because a fume remains or is flown in the lower part of the material to be cut, the fume is apt to stick to the back side of the material to be cut and the lower surface of the material is remarkably stained. <P>SOLUTION: In this method of cutting a steel sheet or the like, a burnable and fire non-spreadable sheet of fire sheet or film is spread on the surface plate for cutting and, after placing the material to be cut on it, thermal cutting is performed.
