PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a program recording apparatus which is capable of increasing the residual capacity of a recording medium without affecting necessary parts of already recorded program data in the case of the lack of the capacity of the recording medium required for recording a program. SOLUTION: When determining that a recording part 3 does not have a prescribed free space, a control part 7 of a program recording apparatus 1 selects program data from program data recorded in the recording part 3 and makes an unnecessary part detection part 4 detect unnecessary parts from the program data and makes a re-encoding part 5 perform re-encoding processing of the unnecessary parts of the program data and performs overwriting of the program data in the recording part 3.
