PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydrogen storage material which has high hydrogen storing/releasing rates, can keep the stable amount of hydrogen to be stored/released, can easily be produced and is made inexpensive, and to provide a method for producing the hydrogen storage material. SOLUTION: The hydrogen storage material includes an alkali metal, aluminum, silicon, hydrogen and halogen. The method for producing the hydrogen storage material includes: a mixing step of mixing the alkali metal or an alkali metal-containing compound, aluminum or an aluminum-containing compound, silicon or a silicon-containing compound, hydrogen or a hydrogen-containing compound and halogen or a halogen-containing compound to produce a mixture; and a heating step of heating the mixture.
