PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-security biometric authentication system and method. SOLUTION: An authentication system comprises: a database for holding collation feature amount data and identification information for each registered user; a means for extracting feature amount data from biological information on a user to be authenticated; a means for authenticating feature amount data of a user to be authenticated and collation feature amount data to determine one or more candidate or for determining that there is no candidate; a means for selecting the identification information on one or more candidates and a (constant L: the number of candidates) pieces of dummy information as presentation information when one or more candidates are determined and selecting the constant L pieces of dummy information as the presentation information when it is determined that there is no candidate; a means for displaying the presentation information; a means for receiving from the user to be authenticated designation of the presentation information displayed; and a means for determining that the user to be authenticated is a registered user corresponding to the designated identification information when the user to be authenticated designates the identification information.
