PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the starting torque of a Stirling engine. SOLUTION: This Stirling engine 100 has a heat exchanger 108, a high temperature side cylinder 101, a low temperature side cylinder 102, a high temperature side piston 103 reciprocating in the high temperature side cylinder 101, a low temperature side piston 104 reciprocating in the low temperature side cylinder 102, a working fluid discharge passage 31 making the low temperature side cylinder 102 communicated with an external part of a casing 100C, and a working fluid passage opening/closing valve 30 arranged in the working fluid discharge passage 31. When starting the Stirling engine 100, the working fluid passage opening/closing valve 30 is opened, and discharges a working fluid in a low temperature side operation space MSL to the outside of the Stirling engine 100.
