<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a spatial light modulator with which lowering of efficiency of using light can be reduced and difficulty in manufacturing are alleviated and an image display device. <P>SOLUTION: The spatial light modulator 19R is equipped with a liquid crystal layer 37 to modulate light corresponding to an image signal, is equipped with an incident side glass substrate 31 which is a first substrate to transmit light incident on the liquid crystal layer 37, a microlens array 32 equipped with a plurality of microlenses 33 to condense light transmitted by the first substrate, and a plurality of opening regions 35b to transmit light condensed with the microlenses 33, and has a light shielding section 35 to shield light on light shielding regions 35a between the opening regions 35b, and a light emitting side glass substrate 41 which is a second substrate to transmit light emitted from the liquid crystal layer 37, wherein the second substrate has a plurality of condensing regions 42 having a condensing effect to condense light, and the condensing region 42 is constructed by using regions formed inside the second substrate and having mutually different refractive indexes. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT |
