Machine tool and method for machining workpieces

The tool has a positioning device for feeding a plate-like workpiece i.e. metal sheet, and a cutting tool in a positioning direction with a positioning movement relative to each other. A controller includes an evaluation unit, which correlates an advancement of a return stroke movement and a resulting advancement of the positioning movement and determines a relative return stroke advancement. The evaluation unit defines specifications for the controller, such that the controller controls a back stroke movement depending on the relative return stroke advancement. An independent claim is also included for a method for machining such as cutting and/or forming, a plate-like workpiece i.e. metal sheet.
