A holding seal member for exhaust gas treating material and an exhaust gas treating device are provided to prevent eolian erosion of the exhaust gas treating element by forming the width of rear plate of the seal member smaller than that of front plate in the exhaust gas inflow direction. A holding seal member for exhaust gas treating material, keeping the exhaust gas treating material in the housing, comprises a sheet member made of inorganic fiber. The sheet member includes a front plate(11) contacting the housing, and a rear plate(12) contacting the exhaust gas treating material. The width(L2) of the rear plate is smaller than the width(L1) of the front plate.
