A flyweight assembly in a transmission unit comprises a plurality of flyweights 12and a plurality of webs 14 connecting the flyweights 12. The flyweights 12 and resilient webs 14 are integrally formed. Each flyweight 12 comprises an outer portion 16a located radially outwardly of an inner portion 16b. The outer 16a and inner 16b portions are substantially perpendicular such that each flyweight 12 is substantially 'L' shaped. The flyweight assembly 10 may be used in a two speed transmission which rotates and cause the flyweights 12 to pivot about their elbows thereby applying an axial force that releases brake/clutch (70, 71, fig 3). The release of the brake/clutch (70, 71) changes a transmission ratio of the transmission since a sun gear (64) is allowed to rotate freely and one-way clutch (53) locks output shaft (4) to rotate with input shaft (49). The 'L' shape of the flyweight 12 is created by forming fold line in an initially planar flyweight and an end distal form am inner portion is additionally weighted. |
