An air filter unit 10, Fig. 1, suitable for use in a suction cleaner comprises a dust extractor e.g., a bag 16 retained in collapsed form in a shell 11 until after insertion in position within the cleaner when it is inflated by the air to be filtered and is thereby extended out of the shell to form an enlarged bag. The end of the shell 11 to which the open end of the bag 16 is secured has a plate 13 having a metal rimmed orifice 12 covered by two semi-circular rubber sheets 14, 15, Fig. 2, with their diameters abutting, which become parted on engagement of the orifice 12 with the end 19 of a dust-laden air intake 28 of the suction cleaner. The other end of the shell 11 is frictionally engaged by a sheet of cardboard 18 stuck to the bottom of the bag 16 and is blown out of the shell during inflation of the bag which is of paper or muslin. In a modification the bag is ejected through a slot running lengthwise of the shell, and in a further modification the shell is a cuboid with the dust-laden air inlet in one side, the bag being projected through an aperture in an adjacent end.
