METHOD FOR DETERMINING DIRECTION OF TRAVEL IN A MOTOR VEHICLE

The method involves recognizing surrounding objects (112, 121, 124) in front of a motor vehicle (100) in a direction of the vehicle. A possible contact of the vehicle with the objects is detected based on a relative position and speed of the vehicle. A driver-dependent braking or steering process is activated depending on the detection results with regard to possible contact with the object. A driving direction of the vehicle is detected by a protection system (114) or internal or external safety devices (116). The process is inhibited or aborted if reverse driving is detected.
