It may be costly to make loudspeaker enclosures from the materials needed to give an optimum acoustic performance, and the resulting enclosure is often heavy, difficult to transport and easily damaged. These problems are solved by mounting a loudspeaker drive unit 3 in the opening defined by the inner rim 6 of a pneumatic tyre 7. The wall of the tyre may include further openings for use as a reflex port 21 or to mount a tweeter 22. The bead 11 that forms the inner rim of the tyre is reinforced with steel wire and so may provide a secure support for the perimeter of the drive unit 3. The heavy magnet and motor system of the drive unit is supported by a panel 16 that closes the rear of the tyre. A second advantage of this invention is that it provides a use for worn or damaged tyres, so avoiding the financial and environmental costs of disposal. |
