An automatic number plate recognition system is provided to enable a user to do a desired work with one shot of a camera, therefore efficient business processing is easily conducted. A row of inputted images is coded. A maximum group of a number 1 existing in a group 1 of the row is found to compare relation between the maximum group and a scheduled threshold value, then an existence row of gray/level changes is determined. In case of a row having level changes, the lowest row is selected to repeat a process. If the maximum group is smaller than a cyclic threshold value, an upper row of a selected row is given J and a lower row is given K. It is checked whether an absolute value produced by subtracting K from J is larger than or equal to a height threshold value to extract a number plate zone. |
